What are we looking for?

Are you passionate about biodiversity and want to learn how to implement conservation and environmental management practices?
Starting in the fall of ’24, the GLOBE Erasmus Mundus Joint Master will recruit up to 25 well-motivated students from all over the world. Candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as long as they can demonstrate academic excellence and a passion for the ecological, social, economic and political challenges posed by contemporary environmental change.

Admission requirements

Candidates must fulfil the following admission requirements:

  • B.Sc. degree or equivalent, corresponding to a minimum of 180 European credit (EC) units in accordance with the European credit transfer and accumulation System (ECTS).
  • Qualifying Bachelor’s degrees include biology, environmental sciences, forestry, geography, natural resources, political sciences or economy, environmental law– or an equivalent Bachelor’s degree.
  • Language proficiency documentation: a minimum of B2 under language proficiency of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required. Exceptions based on nationality or language of education exist (see below). 
  • Application complete on time including all required documentation.

Application procedure

Application documents

The following documents must be uploaded on the online application platform:

  • Proof of nationality: Valid passport or national ID. Candidates with multiple nationalities must decide at application stage under which nationality they apply.
  • Certificate of degree: Copy (authenticated or certified through apostille) of degrees obtained with official seal (i.e. completed higher education studies). If in addition to the BSc you have obtained other degrees (i.e. MSc and/or PhD), please submit a copy of all the degree certificates obtained. Copies should be translated to English (if applicable) by a sworn translator, showing the subjects followed by the applicant and respective marks and credit units obtained.
  • Transcript of records: Copy, in English, of the complete transcripts of records of the previous degrees obtained (i.e. the BSc transcript of records, and MSc transcript of records if applicable).
  • Certificates attesting language skills: The different types of proof that are accepted to qualify the minimum English B2 level are as follows:
    – International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – minimum score 5.5.
    – TOEFL iBT- at least 72 points.
    – Cambridge – minimum grade B2, minimum score 160.
    – Generally, students who are nationals of a majority English-speaking country or have graduated from a university in a majority English-speaking country (as defined here by the UKVI), or their higher education has been carried out entirely in English, will be exempt from providing an English level certificate. If you are in this position, upload a declaration that this is the case, explaining if this is by virtue of nationality or education, and providing suitable certificates of the later if needed.
  • Curriculum Vitae, including work experience and research record (if any)
  • Personal statement or motivation letter: Using a maximum of 500 words, state why you are interested in GLOBE and how it could affect your professional career and your life at other levels.
  • Declaration of veracity.
  • Reference Letters: during the application procedure you will need to provide two reference letters informing on your academic and/professional skills.
  • Postgraduate Eligibility Certificate: if your home university does not belong to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), a certificate accrediting that the studies completed grant access to an official postgraduate program in the country of origin, issued by your home university.
  • Short Video: a 1-2 minutes short video introducing yourself and explaining why you would like to enrol in the GLOBE Programme.
    Other considerations on the application procedure
    • The Application platform should be filled in English, as well as all the attached documents.
    • Please make sure you have all the certificates and language skills required to join the GLOBE Master programme.
    • The official grading system used by the university or country needs to be clearly presented in the certificates.
    • If an applicant submits more than one application, the system will automatically consider the most recent one.
    • There is no application fee.

    Apply now! Application Period Extended to the 24th January 2025

    The application period to the 1st edition (academic year 2025/26) of GLOBE is now open, from the 17th October 2024 to the 24th January 2025. Application is made through the online application platform hosted at URJC, the coordinating institution. Both self-funded candidates and scholarship applicants submit their application forms through the same online system. The application system will guide you through the process.

    Selection procedure

    • After completion of the administrative assessment, the eligible candidates will be evaluated for their academic merits in two stages.
    • First stage: the dossiers of applicants will be assessed according to the following academic criteria: Academic Excellence, Fit of the degree to the topic of the Master, and professional and academic career as expressed in their CVs.
    • Second stage: the top ranked applicants from the first phase will be assesed based on their Introductory Videos, Letters of Motivation, and References Letters.
    • The scores from the first and second stages will carry a weight of 70% and 30%, respectively, in the final evaluation of each candidate.
    • ​The selection committee, using the application materials, will compile a final list of applications, ranking candidates according to their qualifications.
    • Candidates will be promptly informed of the outcome on admission, soon after the selection process, and admitted students will be notified on whether they are proposed for a scholarship. A period and procedure for appeals will be enabled at this stage.
    • In the event of a candidate withdrawing, the subsequent candidate on the list will be contacted.

    Participation costs

    In the first edition of GLOBE (2025-2026), the participation costs will be 4,500 EUR per academic year for students coming from Programme countries (and associated countries), and 9,000 EUR per academic year for students coming from third countries not associated to the Programme.     The participation costs include:

    • Health and accident insurance during the whole academic period
    • All academic activities of the programme, including the summer school and joint events.
    • The registration of the student as regular student at the partner universities
    • Tuition fees
    • Access to libraries, laboratories, and other institutional facilities.
    • Services to students, like information for visa application procedures, etc.

    The participation costs do not include:

    • Living expenses
    • Travel costs
    • Visa costs

    Scholarships and Financial support

    Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarships:

    Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) scholarships are available and awarded on a competitive basis to a subset of the applicants selected for admission. The scholarships cover the full 24-month duration of the programme for full-time students, including all participation fees, and provide a monthly stipend of 1,400€ to cover expenses such as living costs, accommodation, travel etc. The assignment of the scholarships will balance the criteria explained in the programme selection procedure section, with geographical distribution criteria, as some of the scholarships are only eligible for applicants of certain regions of the world (list of targeted regions for this subset of scholarships here). Students who have already benefitted from an EMJM scholarship in the past are not eligible to apply for additional EMJM scholarships.
